Once upon a time, there was a boy named Hansel and a girl named Gretel. They lived with their father and their stepmother. Their family was very poor. There was not much food.

One day their stepmother said, “We must leave the children in the forest.”

Hansel and Gretel walked into the forest with their father. Hansel dropped small stones on the path.

Soon their father left them in the forest. Hansel and Gretel were alone. “We are lost,” said Gretel.

At night they followed the stones. They walked and walked. They found their way home.

The stepmother was angry. She said again, “We must leave the children in the forest.”

Hansel and Gretel walked into the forest with their father. Hansel dropped pieces of bread on the path.

But the birds ate the bread. Hansel and Gretel could not find the way home. “We are lost,” said Gretel.

They walked and walked in the forest. Soon they saw a small house.

The house was made of cakes and sweets. Hansel and Gretel were very hungry. They ate the house.

An old woman came out of the house. “Come inside,” she said. “I will give you some food.”

But the old woman was not kind. She was a witch. She kept Hansel and Gretel in her house.

Every day she said, “I will eat you.” Hansel and Gretel were very afraid.

One day Gretel had a plan. She pushed the witch into the oven.

Hansel and Gretel ran away. They found their way home. “We are safe,” said Gretel.

Their father was very happy. The stepmother was gone. They lived happily together again.
