Once upon a time, a hare lived in a green forest. He liked to run very fast.

A slow tortoise also lived in the forest. The hare laughed at the tortoise.

“You are so slow,” said the hare. “I can run much faster than you.”

The tortoise looked at the hare. “Let us have a race,” said the tortoise.

“A race?” laughed the hare. “That will be very easy!”

Soon the animals came to watch the race. The fox said, “Ready, set, go!”

The hare ran very fast down the path. The tortoise walked slowly behind him.

Soon the hare looked back. The tortoise was far behind.

“This race is very easy,” said the hare. “I will rest for a little while.”

The hare lay down under a tree. Soon he fell fast asleep.

Slowly the tortoise walked past the sleeping hare. Step by step he walked down the path.

Soon the hare woke up. He jumped up and ran fast. But it was too late.

The tortoise was near the finish line. The animals cheered loudly.

The tortoise crossed the finish line first. The hare stopped and looked surprised.

“Slow and steady wins the race,” said the tortoise. The animals clapped for the tortoise.
