One sunny afternoon, a hungry dog wandered through the village lanes. He sniffed left, he sniffed right, until he found something wonderful: a big, juicy bone!

“Oh, what a treasure!” he thought proudly. He trotted along with a springy step, tail sweeping the dust like a cheerful broom. But soon, he reached a wooden bridge over a wide, shining river.

He peeked down—and froze. In the glowing water below, another dog stared back… holding a bone that shimmered like gold.

“Hmph,” thought the dog. “Maybe his bone is only a tiny bit bigger.” He stretched his neck. The shadow dog stretched too.

“No… it’s definitely bigger,” he decided. He puffed up, imagining two bones at once. “Oh, imagine the crunching!”

He inched closer to the edge. The shadow dog inched closer too. Their noses almost touched—rippling, wiggling, wobbling.

“Alright,” he plotted. “On three, I bark. One… two…” He opened his mouth wide—

But the shadow dog opened his mouth too! This startled the real dog so much that he jumped back and almost dropped his own bone.

He steadied himself. “Okay… maybe just a small bark,” he whispered. He leaned over again. The shadow dog leaned too, bone gleaming temptingly.

“Woof?” he tried softly. The shadow dog “woofed” back silently. The river rippled, teasing him.

Now the dog was determined. “Alright, mister,” he growled, “prepare to lose your bone!” His tail swished like a battle flag.

He took a long breath, and barked with all his might. “WOOF!”

Splash! His own bone slipped from his mouth, tumbling into the river with a lonely little plop.

The shadow dog vanished. Only widening circles drifted across the quiet water. The real dog stared in stunned silence.

He sat by the riverbank, watching the ripples fade. A fish jumped, scattering tiny sparks across the surface. The dog sighed.

“In the end,” he murmured, “I barked at myself… and scared my own treasure away.” The wind brushed gently through his fur.

He stood, feeling a little wiser and a little lighter. Next time, he promised himself, he’d hold tight to the things that were already his.
